To Readers of the Blind Californian,
I am a graduate student at Cal State University, Dominguez Hills. I have been a part of the Learning Ally College Success Program mentorship for over two years. This organization paired me with a mentor, James Boehm. James and I have talked over the phone for the duration of our course work. At the end of each year we talked about what we will be doing during the summer. One of the things that caught my attention was his foundation, "You Cane Give Initiative."
Mr. Boehm told me he was "going to Kenya to distribute some canes to blind citizens." I was excited he was willing to spend time giving back to what is so freely given to us in the United States. Here we can easily obtain a white cane for the blind. During our conversations I told him I am a member of the Glendale-Burbank Area chapter of the California Council of the Blind (CCB). I said I would like to inform them about his cause.
Therefore, I am writing to bring attention of blind people in another country. They do not have our benefits and need our help. They do not have the means to obtain a cane and need our support.
I am asking our blind community to join the cause by assisting the You Cane Give Initiative by giving back to our community, the blind community, no matter how far away.
My heartfelt request to you is that you look deep into your hearts and give back to what is so freely given to us. Please donate your used, broken or disregarded cane (s). They can be fixed and used for a greater cause.
