Legislative Update
From Jeff Thom:
We took a huge step forward this week toward elimination of the Guide Dog Board on January 1, 2018. AB1705 is being amended in the Senate Business, Professions and Economic Development Committee to allow the board to be abolished and instead provide that instructors must be employed by guide dog schools certified by the International Guide Dog Federation, which is essentially the case already.
Through the coordinated efforts, the CCB, NFBC, Guide Dogs for the Blind and other advocates and organizations we have made the Legislature understand that the board is no longer necessary and is often counterproductive in terms of consumer protection. We aren’t over the goal line yet, with final passage in both houses needed before adjournment in early September and then a signature by the Governor, so we’ll let you know when more letters are necessary.
