California Connection September 15, 2017

Welcome to the California connection for September 15.

CEO Vacation

The CEO will be on vacation from September 19-September 23rd.

CANES Across California

The last registration begins on September 1, 2017. This is the last opportunity that you will have to obtain a CANES shirt for your scheduled events.

We have designed a brief, half-sheet flyer with talking points for Canes Across California. It has both the CAC and CCB logos in addition to the text.

Nicole can send you print flyers or a pdf or text version upon request.

From The President

My attempts to send my September’s President’s message from the wiles of northern California proved fruitless, and by the time I returned to civilization, too many chapters had met for this month. I promise a message next month, but in the meantime, it has been too long since I’ve had a chance to visit with CCB members. In that light, I’m scheduling open “Office Hours” on Saturday, September 23 from 4-5 PM.

Dial-in number: 712-770-8014
access code: 127353

Any and all questions and concerns welcome.

Bylaws Call

Over the next few days we will be distributing a few discussion questions that we would like your input on. If you need them read to you please call Nicole in the office at 800-221-6359.

Date: Wednesday September 20
Time: 7:00 PM

This committee welcomes the opportunity to answer any questions that At Large Members may have about CCB, its organizational structure and benefits for joining a chapter/affiliate, etc.

The CCB Membership Committee would appreciate Board Members, Chapter/Affiliate Presidents and the CCB general membership to offer their prospective on the call as well.

Come one. Come all! We look forward to hearing from all of you “Members At Large” on the call!
The CCB Membership Committee cares about you!

Remote Voting:
From Advocacy Committee Chair Steven Mendelsohn

Mike Nunez representing CCB in our San Mateo County remote voting case writes as follows:

"The Secretary of State has completed its certification testing of both the Democracy Live and Five Cedars remote accessible vote-by-mail ("RAVBM") systems. The Secretary has published two staff reports concerning its review of each of the two systems. The reports conclude that both the Democracy Live and Five Cedars RAVBM systems comply with all California and federal legal requirements, which amounts to a staff recommendation that the Secretary certify the systems.

The Secretary’s Office has set a public hearing for public comments concerning both of these systems. The hearing is scheduled for 9 am on September 27 at the following address: 1500 11th Street, 1st Floor Auditorium, Sacramento. There is no specific end time for the hearing. The hearing is the last step before the Secretary decides whether to certify the two RAVBM systems. The Secretary’s Office informed us that the Secretary can issue a certification decision concerning both RAVBM systems as early as Friday September 29. Given the staff reports positive findings for both systems, we are cautiously optimistic that the Secretary will certify both systems for use in California."

We need to show support for these all-important vote-by-mail systems.
If you can attend this hearing, please contact Jeff Thom at 916-995-3967 or by email: jsthom@comcast.net.
