California Connection May 20, 2016

Welcome to the California connection for May 20.

From The President

This year, at the annual ACB Conference and Convention, we will be holding our 10th annual ACB auction, entitled "A Decade of Dreams Auction."
If you would like to donate anything to a California basket, let me know prior to May 30, either by e-mail jsthom@comcast.net or by phone at 916-995-3967.

You can bring your item to me if you are attending the convention or send it to the office ahead of time, but I need a description of what our basket will hold by May 30. Even gift cards are very welcome additions, as is anything original or that has a California flavor to it.
Thanks again for all that you do in this regard.

Future Convention Conference Call

Dear Presidents, members, and other interested parties:
A statewide conference call for members and interested parties will take place on May 23rd from 7 PM to 9 PM.
The call-in number is 712.432.3066 and the code is 840878.

The conference call is the second of two forums to gather the opinions of attendees and potential attendees of future CCB conferences and conventions.

The forum will focus on two questions which follow:

Question 1: What, in your opinion, would be an ideal length of time for a conference and convention (cc)?
When answering, please consider the following:

  1. If the cc were reduced by one day, what do you feel could be sacrificed?
  2. If the cc were lengthened by one day, what programming would you add?
  3. If the cc were kept at the current four days, would there be a need to make changes, and what would you propose?

Question 2: What are the reasons you and/or other members do not attend conferences and conventions?

Responses to these questions will only be accepted during the May 23rd conference call. However, there will be surveys developed in the next few months to gather additional information such as, but not limited to, the cost items related to putting on a conference and convention.

Please disseminate and encourage your members as well as other interested parties to participate on this conference call. Those who cannot participate on the May 23rd conference call or wish to amend their comments can do so by email at ccotb@ccbnet.org or phone 1-800-221-6359.

Ed Branch, CCB Administrative Assistant, will take dictated comments from phone callers.
Email and phone submissions must be made on or before 11:59 PM Monday May 30, 2016.
Best regards,
Gene Lozano
Chair Conference and Convention Committee

LightHouse Grand Opening

LightHouse for the Blind is planning a Grand Opening celebration and we'd like for you to join us.
We have spent the last few years and much creative energy to construct our new, innovative headquarters at 1155 Market Street. We are excited to welcome our community to experience the unique design features and the expanded potential of this new facility specifically created by the blind for the blind and low vision community.

To kick off the day of celebration, we are starting on the steps of the San Francisco City Hall with some special guests who would like to honor the LightHouse and our big move.
Then we will take to the streets with a parade full of fanfare on our way to the new building!

March with us at the "Blind & Proud" Parade!
Please save the date and plan to be a part of the Parade! We would be honored to have you or your organization, along with other allies and supporters from all over the state, as a strong contingent in the grand march along Van Ness and Market Streets in the center of San Francisco.
We welcome banners and other festive ways to show your support of and partnership with the LightHouse. Our marching band will lead the way so we hope you are there alongside us for the excitement!

Library Conference

On August 11-12, in conjunction with the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) 2016 World Library Information Congress (WLIC), the Section on Libraries Serving Persons with Print Disabilities (LPD) is sponsoring a pre-Congress satellite conference in Louisville, Kentucky: Tailoring the Reading Experience to Meet Individual Needs.

The satellite conference is co-sponsored by the American Printing House for the Blind and will feature an international array of speakers on topics including: facilitating the book selection process, accessible audio book technologies, serving the full spectrum of print disabilities, creating inclusive communities for people with disabilities through programming and events, the added value of an analog service in the heart of the digital era, and promoting Braille literacy.

This conference offers a rare opportunity for professionals from a variety of disciplines to discuss the challenges and solutions to providing timely accessible materials in appropriate formats to the people we serve.

Librarians from special libraries for people who are blind and visually impaired, as well as from public libraries serving blind and print-disabled patrons; educators, accessible instructional materials providers; professionals from university disability offices, and others with an interest in these topics have been invited to come together to learn, to share, and to discuss.
I invite you to join the conversation.
