California Connection August 05, 2016

Welcome to the California connection for August 5.

Obbie Schoeman Remembrance

Jeff Thom:
It is hard to know where to start when talking about Obbie. He is without doubt splitting his time between his wife Connie, to whom he was so devoted, and making the rest of the folks have a few good laughs.

It would not have been unusual had Obbie's involvement in CCB dramatically decreased after Connie's passing, but Obbie was not that kind of person. Right up until the end, he remained involved in matters of import to our community and always did his best to help CCB and blind people in general. A lesser man might have decided to take his toys and go home when he lost an election for the board of directors and some, at least, clearly voted against him because he wasn't blind, but again that wasn't the type of guy Obbie was.

Whether he was making the world a better place by his hard work on behalf of others or just by giving you a chuckle or two, Obbie, in my mind, was a difference-maker. I suspect we'll be swapping memories of Obbie for a long time and that really says it all.

I'd like to close, however, by acknowledging two people who came to the forefront in Obbie's latter days and made a real difference.
Without unduly belaboring the point, the time and effort that Donna Pomerantz and Debbie Cordero took in making life a bit easier for Obbie during his latter days is one we can all take to heart and that kind of selfless conduct is something to which we can all aspire. It makes me proud to be part of the CCB family.

Obbie Schoeman Go Fund Me Page

Obbie was a very generous man to those he cared about and this included CCB.
As a result of expenses incurred during his illness, his family is asking for assistance with costs related to his burial.

From The Division Of The State Architect (DSA)

State statute requires DSA to develop and propose building code regulations related to accessibility for persons with disabilities to public buildings, public accommodations, commercial buildings and public housing.

DSA proposes building code regulations in accordance with the rulemaking processes administered by the California Building Standards Commission.

Throughout the year, DSA will conduct meetings, public workshops and other activities to discuss possible amendments for the 2016 California Building Standards Code. These meetings and public workshops provide open forums for the public, the disability community and other stakeholders to participate in identifying and vetting potential modifications to California's building codes.

DSA also offers accessibility classes and administers the Certified Access Specialist (CASp) examinations and certification program.

We invite you to subscribe to DSA's mailing list in order to stay up to date on DSA's access-related programs and activities.
Please follow the instructions on DSA's subscription webpage or send your request to DSAcommunication@dgs.ca.gov
