The California Council of the Blind was founded in 1934, to bring together people from across the state who were dedicated to increasing the independence and equality for all Californians who are blind or have low vision. That is over 85 years of advocacy, connection, and commitment.

I came to this organization over 20 years ago as a college student. I lost my vision in Kindergarten and then grew up as the only blind kid in my school district so never spent any significant time around other people who were blind or had low vision. Since I’d spent my entire life to that point around people who were fully sighted I never saw myself being part of an organization of people who are blind. Getting involved in CCB was almost an accident. I started by joining the student’s email list and eventually attended a chapter meeting.

Once I started getting involved in CCB it was as though I’d come home. It is such a comfort to have a community of people who experience the same troubles and triumphs as I have gone through. CCB has such a rich history of advocacy and I am so honored to be a part of this organization. I owe so much to those who have come before me and worked so hard to give me the opportunities I have now that I want to work as hard as I can to help give those who will come after me even more opportunities.

As President of CCB I hope to reach more Californians who are blind or have low vision to connect them with their peers, resources, and to success. I share this hope with our many chapters and special interest affiliates across the state that are comprised of incredible people doing incredible work. Together we will continue the mission that our organization was founded on, succeeding in our grass roots advocacy efforts, building life long relationships, and having a whole lot of fun doing it!
