CCB Happenings April 12, 2019

Welcome to the CCB happenings for April 12.

Call For Candidates:

At the 2019 CCB convention we will have 7 seats up for election including 2 officer positions and 5 director positions. If you are interested in running for one of these seats please submit answers to the below questions. The word count limit is 300 words for each question. However, you may submit answers for all 3 questions in one document. Send your submissions to ccotb@ccbnet.org with the subject line of your last name and CCB candidate questions. The deadline for submissions is Friday April 26th.

  1. State the position you are seeking. What are your qualifications for this office, and what contributions have you made to your chapter or affiliate or to the statewide organization in the last year?
  2. In light of The Phoenix Committee’s charge to chart the way forward for CCB, what are your recommendations for charting CCB’s future and how would you achieve them?
  3. Briefly discuss a major internal debate likely to face CCB during your term.

CCB Convention:

We are almost half way to our room nites for the 2019 CCB convention in Fresno. There are a limited number of rooms still available for Wednesday June 5th. To make reservations you can make reservations by calling 559-268-1000 or online at

Be sure to mention that you are attending the California Council of the Blind Convention. The all-inclusive rate is $135 per night, although the reservationist may quote you the price of $117.90 plus tax, which is equal to $135.

CCB Presidents Call:

There will be a CCB presidents call on Monday April 22nd at 7:30 PM. While anyone is welcome to dial in we will be asking that only the chapter president or designee speak. We will be sending out an agenda and dial in information closer to the time of the meeting and in next week's Happenings.

Announcing CCB Governmental Affairs District Days - Call To Action And Next Steps:

The CCB Governmental Affairs Committee is planning District Days instead of a Capitol Day this year. The GA Committee will assist Chapters and Affiliates in prepping for this opportunity with tools and practice sessions.

Chapter and affiliate legislative liaisons, and anyone interested, please email Ardis Bazyn at abazyn@bazyncommunications.com asap to confirm your interest in participation. We are creating an email list for the 2019 District days. When emailing Ardis, please list the following:

Name, Chapter or Affiliate, phone number and Preferred Practice Session.

A detailed email has been sent to the CCB Chapter Legislative Liaisons list and President’s list. Please note the following important dates:

Local Office Visits will need to be scheduled for the week of April 29 through May 3 in your respective state Assembly and Senate member’s offices.

Practice calls will be scheduled for two dates to select: April 22 or April 24, and Jeff Thom and Sylvia Reese will facilitate these calls. Zoom call-in info will be sent to all those who contact Ardis as noted above. Packets of talking points will be sent to those who register.

Usability Study:

We are recruiting participants for a usability study on an accessible 3D modeling workflow for the blind and visually impaired. Participants with any experience of programming are preferred; proficiency not required. The study will last between 1.5 to 2 hours, will be conducted in the months of April to May and participants will be compensated $50 for their time.

Alexa is a PhD Student at Stanford University conducting research to advance accessible interfaces for Making (e.g. 3D modeling and printing, electronics prototyping) for the blind and visually impaired.
